The U.S. National Library of Medicine PubMed has several hundred papers about and related to aromatherapy. However it is user friendly, succinct and easy enough to trawl through for a particular subject.

Aromatherapy Research on the Web:

~ PubMed: A library of published research studies. Try a search such as "essential oil" or "massage AND aromatherapy." You will get a list of citations, many of which include abstracts. Try reading an abstract, which is a summary of the study presented in the research paper. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/

~ WebMD: A great site that distills and reports clinical studies in non-technical language. Try searching for articles using the phrases "essential oil" or "aromatherapy." http://www.webmd.com/

Tim Jacobs http://www.cf.ac.uk/biosi/staffinfo/jacob/ is from Cardiff University and researches onto the effects of aroma.

They are investigating the effects of certain odours on the following physiological parameters:

heart rate
respiration rate
EEG activity
blood oxygen
skin resistance
blood pressure

Smell has the ability to affect our physiological and psychological state via two mechanisms; (1) the instrinsic pharmacological properties of the odour molecule itself and (2) contextual association and memory.

Tim Jacobs' site is fascinating and also links to other information about olfaction research http://www.cf.ac.uk/biosi/staffinfo/jacob/teaching/sensory/olfact1.html#Mood

For example :

Smell and dreams

A recent study in Germany has shown that smell can influence the quality and emotional tone of dreams. Researchers wafted the smell of roses under the noses of sleeping volunteers in the REM phase of their sleep (dreaming phase). They then woke them up and asked them to report on the content and quality of their dreams. While the subjects did not report actually smelling anything during their dreams, the emotional tone of their dream did change depending upon the stimulation. The smell of roses evoked pleasant emotions and the smell of rotting eggs had the opposite effect.

It is commonly said that there is not enough research completed to prove that aromatherapy is clinically effective. However there is more out there than many of us realise. If you know of any research that can be accessed can you write and very brief explanation - one sentence could be enough - of the work and post up the link to it. We could build a good resource centre this way.
